What goes through your mind when somebody tells you farewell at the end of a conversation?

Me and a friend were discussing the different forms of saying goodbye and the percieved finality that goes along with them. I was telling her that a friend of mine told me "farewell" at the end of a conversation, and I was a little confused as to how I should take it. If someone said to you "farewell" would you percieve it to be a final goodbye?
