What is the explanation of use in space exploration of a radio wave?

Radio waves are transmitted back and enable the reception of distant signals, even very faint ones. With regard to space exploration, the idea is to check out resources found or manufactured on other planetary bodies, and to determine whether these could in turn be used to further the goals of a space mission, or not.
