Are age spots/sun spots hereditary?

my mother is almost 60 and her skin is in great condition. most people think she is younger then her age. she is an avid gardener and spends many hours outdoors with no sunscreen on. she is always very tan (my family has olive skin) but she has no sun spots at all! is olive skin less prone to sun damage?
